Q & A

What is Colon Hydrotherapy?
The aim of colon hydrotherapy is to cleanse the lower intestinal tract and detoxify the system. This is achieved through a painless and non-invasive process that uses a continuous flow of water into and out of the colon to gently remove hardened waste.

Can I work directly after having a colon hydrotherapy treatment?
Certainly. You can work just as you would after a regular bowel movement.
What should I do to prepare for a colon hydrotherapy treatment?
We ask that you do a few simple things: 2 days prior to the session, refrain from refined sugars and carbohydrates, fried food,  carbonated beverages, soy and red meat. The day of the session: do not eat anything 2 hours before your treatment, and drink plenty of fluids to keep your colon hydrated.
Do treatments hurt?

No. In fact many people report their colon hydrotherapy sessions as being both refreshing and relaxing. Some people do sleep during the session.

Does having a menstrual period at the time of a colon hydrotherapy session have any effect on the visit?

No. In fact it’s usually a good time to receive a treatment, since your body is already cleansing. Your flow has no effect on the success of the treatment.
What is the colon?
The colon, or large intestine, is the end portion of the human digestive tract. The colon is approximately 5 feet long and 2 ½ inches in diameter. The major function is to eliminate waste and to conserve water. Also, there are bacteria living in the colon which synthesize valuable nutrients such as vitamin “K” and portions of the “B” complex.

What is the difference between an enema and a colonic?

The basic principle behind enemas and colonics is the same: both are methods used to flush waste from the colon via water introduced into the rectum. Both can be highly effective in stimulating the colon to eliminate putrefactive waste from the body. However, there are notable differences between the two.

During an enema, a quantity of water, usually between a quarter litre to one litre, is taken into the body, where it travels approximately 6 to 8 inches up the colon, is typically held for up to 20 minutes, and then expelled. Although this procedure can be of a relatively short duration, retaining such a volume of water can be uncomfortable. Also, self-administering requires that the person doing the enema be mindful of all aspects of the procedure as it is carried out, which may make it difficult to feel relaxed.

Colonics tend to be more soothing and thorough, and less inconvenient. The mechanics of colonics involve a large container filled with filtered water which flows into a tube. This tube is attached to a disposable hard plastic instrument called a proctoscope. Once the proctoscope is gently inserted into the rectum, a second tube is attached which carries waste matter and water out of the body and directly into the septic system. Water entering the body travels through the colon and exits into the waste tube in a continuous flow. In this way, water is able to travel farther into the colon.

This procedure holds several advantages over a simple enema. Because water flows continuously in and out of the body, a much greater quantity of water, between 10 and 50 litres, is flushed through the colon. This allows water to completely permeate the folds of the colon and to saturate the impacted waste throughout the entire length of the colon. Also, water filling the space within the colon exerts a slight pressure against the muscle tissue of the colon wall, stimulating muscle action which provides exercise for the colon, helping to tone and reshape a weakened colon. There is no mess and no odor as the water and waste are completely contained. Another advantage is that the Colon Therapist is responsible for administering the colonic, allowing the person receiving the treatment to remain relaxed and comfortable without concern for the mechanical aspects of the procedure.

What is the difference between a colonic and colonoscopy preparation?

The main difference is that a colonic is part of a healthy lifestyle whereas a colonoscopy preparation is only done before a colonoscopy.

A colonoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that is usually done after the age of 50 to screen for cancer and possible polyps. In order to prepare for the colonoscopy,  one needs to fully clean out the colon to allow for the colonoscopy camera to enter the bowels.  To do this, many hospitals have patients consume a liquid-only diet a few days ahead of time and then ingest Bowel Prep Solutions, usually containing sodium phosphate, or sodium sulphate, the night before the procedure. This is a process that requires one to stay close to home and can be uncomfortable for some people.

Many hospitals are now beginning to recommend colon hydrotherapy (colonics) as a bowel prep over the drinkable laxatives.  The conclusion of one study was that, "the quality of colon cleansing, overall tolerance, comfort, and convenience were significantly better." Overall, bowel viewing was better on all sides of the colon using colon hydrotherapy, as opposed to the polyethylene glycol-electrolyte lavage.

As always, if there are any underlying medical issues, consult your doctor before considering colon hydrotherapy for any reason.

Testimonials

I have been meeting with Ivone over the last two months to do a series of colon cleanses.

I find her to be very professional and knowledgeable about the practice and overall health

of the body. What I admire the most about Ivone is the fact that her primary focus is on healing and helping her clients. I have seen a huge difference in my overall health, especially since we started the back-to-back sessions instead of spreading them over a longer period of time. I also appreciate that she was kind enough to provide me with

tools to use at home to maintain the improvement I have seen. Thank you!

Health improvement & colon hydrotherapy client

I was suffering for 3 days with extremely painful abdominal and intestinal gas, the result

of food poisoning. It was an agonizing experience, and I took various medications but with little effect. I walked in hunched over because of the painful cramps and trapped gas.

My son was amazed when I came out of the session completely refreshed and no longer suffering cramps of any kind! I happily give the highest rating and recommendation.

Thank you for ending my suffering.
